MADD And Law Enforcement Taking Aim At Drunk Driving During Holidays

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging law enforcement in Orlando to crack down on drunk driving, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The organization held a press conference at the Florida Highway Patrol’s headquarters in Orlando.

“When you mix driving and being impaired, it’s a recipe for disaster,” says Osceola County Sheriff Bob Hansell. There is typically in an increase in drunk driving around the holidays. According to MADD director Yolanda Larson, drunk drivers killed 774 people in Florida in 2010 and 11,000 nationally.

“There’s a face behind each number, and a family behind each victim,” said Larson. “Lot of people are driving anyway, with suspended or revoked licenses.”

Pedestrian Killed by Cop Car in Mount Dora

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

While there are entire campaigns devoted to stopping drunk driving, it bears mentioning that any operating any vehicle while under the influence is dangerous and illegal. Unfortunately, in many cases even walking under the influence can lead to tragedy.

Late Saturday night, Mount Dora police Officer Barry Strykowski struck and killed pedestrian Scott Ferguson on his way home after his usual 12-hour shift. Officer Strykowski is said to be “extremely distraught” over the incident, and has been placed on paid administrative leave until the case is closed.

Pedestrians involved in motor vehicle accidents have a high risk for serious injury. Each year, there are around 5000 pedestrian deaths and about 64,000 injuries due to motor vehicle accidents in this country. It is extremely important to be aware of your surroundings when on foot.

Later reports revealed that drugs or alcohol might have been a factor for Ferguson’s death. Allegedly, he had come close to being hit earlier in the night by a different motorist. Going anywhere while under the influence can be dangerous.

It is important to be safe at all times when drinking. Have a designated driver or even a designated walker if you are not traveling far. Also, remember to speak to an Orlando accident attorney if you find yourself in any sort accident as a pedestrian or otherwise to protect your rights.

Florida Highway Patrol Reports Fewer Deaths Over Labor Day Week-end

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Florida Highway Patrol reported they responded to 65% fewer auto accident-related deaths involving alcohol over the long Labor Day week-end.  They investigated 7 deaths in 2009 compared to 20 in 2008.  While the state-wide numbers have not been tabulated, Col. John Czernis, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, attributed the drop in fatalities to their special emphasis on arresting drunk drivers.

There was a national campaign going on from August 21 through September 7, which included the Labor Day week-end.  Law enforcement across the nation were focusing on the Over the Limit. Under Arrest. campaign in an effort to save us all from drunk drivers.

FHP troopers also put extra effort  on their Be Smart, Drive Smart Florida! program which stresses the importance of the Florida Move Over Law.

Over Labor Day week-end, FHP law enforcement officers arrested 136 impaired drivers issued more than 16,000 tickets for traffic violations.  If just one of those tickets saved a life, the FHP troopers have done their job.  As Col. Czernis said,

We can attribute part of the dramatic reduction in fatalities investigated by the Patrol to our efforts to educate the public about Florida traffic laws and to enforce those laws.”
