Officials to Crackdown on Drunk Driving over Long Holiday Week-end

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Local law enforcement officials are working together this week-end to prevent alcohol-related auto accidents in Orlando and the surrounding area.  Their message is pretty clear:  ”Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.”,  The message is aimed at drivers who get behind the wheel while impaired putting themselves and other at risk.

While not often thought of as a “crime”, the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the “most-often-committed and deadliest crimes” in America.  Remember – driving while impaired is not an accident and it is not a victimless crime.   In 2007 alone almost 13,000 people were killed in auto accidents involving a driver with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.  This number includes motorcycle drivers.

NHTSA asks that as you celebrate the end of summer this Labor Day Week-end that you take the following precautions:

  • Plan ahead. If you are planning to drink alcohol with friends, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person the keys;
  • If you didn’t plan ahead and you’re impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely;
  • Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement;
  • Wear your seat belt while in a car or use a helmet and protective gear when on a motorcycle as these are your best defenses against an impaired driver;
  • And remember, if you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Have You Seen the “Death By Cell Phone” Billboards?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

You may have already seen the “Death by Cell Phone”  billboards along the highways near you.  They feature the pictures of a 61 year-old woman and a 12 year-old boy both of whom were victims of auto accidents caused by drivers using cell phones.  The billboards are a continuation the efforts by the National Safety Council’s (NSC) to reduce the number of cellphone-related car crashes.

The message on the billboard is focused on having the viewers watch on-line videos of the surviving relatives.  The survivors tell the stories of their loved ones and the circumstances of the car crashes that took they lives.

The ad campaign was sponsored by Nationwide Insurance Co. and Lamar Advertising who donated the billboard space. It is featured in 67 markets nationwide and has the potential to be seen by over million drivers every day.  The NSC is counting on this wide exposure to educate drivers on the dangers of inattentive driving and particulary in talking on cell phones and text while driving.

“Driver inattention is a leading cause of traffic crashes, responsible for about 80 percent of all collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Considering crashes are the number-one cause of accidental death in the U.S., it is important to pay close attention to our driving habits and those of other drivers.”

The National Safety Council is on a mission to:

  • Alert the American public that different kinds of distractions have different levels of crash risk. Talking on a cell phone and sending text messages are much higher risk activities that occur for longer durations and with more people than most other actions engaged in while driving.
  • Lead a change in our nation’s cultural norms, so people come to view cell phone conversations and text messaging while driving as unsafe and socially unacceptable. Calling for a legislative ban on these activities is the first step in a long-term process to educate Americans to their risk and change the culture.

Smart Key May Save Teens’ Lives

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Ford Motor Company has introduced a new smart key called MyKey.  It is an ignition key designed specifically to lower the incidence of teen driver auto accidents.

MyKey is a safety feature that will be included as a standard feature on almost all Ford products. These safety features include limiting the top speed, requiring seat belt use and limiting the volume on the car stereo system.

Ford has given parental control through the use of the “administrator” key.  Using the onboard computer system that is on most of Ford’s vehicles, parents can set the safety parameters for their teen drivers.

The new features will be availabe on most 2010 models which come out in July and August.  The new features include:

•Speed control limits the top speed of the vehicle to 80 mph, and speed-alert chimes will sound at 45, 55 or 65mph, chosen by the administrator.

•”Insistent belt minder” chimes for six seconds until the seat belts are buckled, a feature in most vehicles. But with MyKey, it also mutes the sound system until everyone buckles up.

•Audio control limits the volume of the sound system to 44 percent of its maximum.

•Traction control, which senses lead-foot acceleration and cuts power to spinning wheels, can usually be turned off at the touch of a button. With MyKey, it can’t.

•Low-fuel warnings typically start at 50 miles from an empty tank. With MyKey, the warning starts at 75.

The top speed of 80 miles per hour may seem high for some parents and setting a lower speed limit may be an option in the future.

The MyKey may be just what parents need to be to finally keep their teens safe behind the wheel.
