Pilot Makes Heroic Crash Landing On Florida Turnpike

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

A single-engine plane was forced to land on the Florida Turnpike earlier this month, shutting down rush-hour traffic, according to The Miami Herald.  Amazingly, there were no major injuries following the plane crash.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, pilot Alain Jaubert was forced to make an emergency landing after an engine failure.  NTSB Spokesman Keith Holloway said that the investigation is still underway.

“We look at everything to piece together what happened,” says Holloway.  The plane had recently undergone maintenance, and this was the first flight since.  The crash landing that left everyone uninjured is being hailed as heroic by some.

“It was a tremendous effort on the pilot’s part not to get anyone hurt,” says Hollywood Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez.

What do you think, did Juabert save the day?  Or should the plane manufacturer or mechanic be held liable here?  What if people were killed?

Parents Urged to Restrain Children Travelling on Vacation

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

While most parents have become deligent in the use of child restraint seats in the car, the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) is urging parents to use child restraint seats on airplanes as well.  A child restraint seat can prevent catastrophic injuries to the child in the event of turbulence or survivable accidents.

If a plane enters airspace with severe turbulence and the child is merely sitting on the parent’s lap, the parent may not be able to securely hold onto the child to prevent it from flying about the cabin.  The NTSB also noted that children who are not restrained in a child seat have become separated from their parents in a survivable crash.  This resulted in their not being evacuated at the same time as their parents.

So when you take that flight to your summer vacation destination, don’t check your child seat with your luggage.  Reserve a seat for your child and make sure they are buckled in with their own safety seat.  It’s the best way to keep your children safe when travelling by air.

Auto Accident Victims No Longer Charged For EMS Services

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Gov. Charlie Crist this week signed a law prohibiting cities and counties from collecting what has been termed “crash taxes” for first responders tending to auto accident victims.

The law was in response to several cities attempts to charge the drivers who caused a  car crash for the services provided by the fire department and emergency medical personnel.  Opponents of the car crash fees said they were improper because taxes are collected to support the emergency personnel and there should be no additional fees for services.

The cities of course are all reporting record budget shortfalls and were using the fees to make up for some of the loss.
