Food Safety Bill Passes the Senate

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Yesterday the Senate passed a major bill which will drastically strenghten the FDA’s ability to monitor food safety to prevent unsafe foods from reaching the market rather than reacting to an outbreak of food-bourne illnesses.

While the Senate and House bills still need to be reconcilled, both versions give the FDA new means by which they can “recall tainted foods, increase inspections, demand accountability from food companies and oversee farming.”  The bill also gives the FDA more control over imported foods by allowing inspection of foreign processing plants and setting farming standards for fruits and vegetables.

We can only hope the two sides can iron out the differences in these two bills so that we don’t have another incident like the peanut recall of 2009 or the salmonella outbreak from the eggs in 2010.

Wooten, Kimbrough & Normand Sponsors Law Student Picnic

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The 7th Annual Minority Mentoring Picnic was held on November 13 and the Orlando personal injury law firm of Wooten, Kimbrough and Normand assisted with financial support in transporting students to the event.

The picnic which began with just a few students gathering at the University of Miami has grown to a huge event drawing busloads of minority law students from all over the state.  This year there was an estimated 2,000, both attorneys and students, who took this opportunity to meet, socialize and enjoy a fabulous meal.  It is the hope that many of these introductions will develop into mentoring opportunities for the students to learn from some of the best attorneys in the state.

Wooten, Kimbrough and Normand Attorneys Participate in “Teach-In”

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Two Orlando Personal Injury Lawyers at Wooten, Kimbrough and Normand, P.A. participated in Orange County Schools annual Teach-In Event.  Injury attorney Ed Normand was an honorary teacher at Moss Park Elementary, where he participated and served as the Prosecutor and Judge of a mock trial.   The “defendant” in the case was charged with violating the Florida Anti-Bullying Statute.  After a trial and deliberation the perpetrator was “sentenced” to 2 years in jail and 1 year of hard labor.  Ed Normand was firm but fair, as always.

Meanwhile, Orlando Personal Injury Lawyer Diego Madrigal served as an honorary teacher for a first grade class at Wyndham Lakes Elementary.  He explained to the students what an injury attorney does, encouraged them to stay in school, read the class a book, and took questions from the kids.  A good time was had by all.

Both attorneys enjoyed the experience tremendously, and hope to do it again
