IKEA Crib Recalled Due to Potential Risk of Collapse

Monday, February 28th, 2011

According to Know About Health, parents are warned of a Canada and the United States safety product recall for the IKEA SNIGLAR crib.

A crib is one of the most important parts of an infant’s room, as it is where many babies spend most of their time during the first few months of life. The crib is also one of the most expensive items that many parents will have to purchase.

According to reports, Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have recalled the IKEA SNIGLAR brand cribs, urging parents to reconsider their use even though no injuries have occurred as of yet.

The reason for the recall is due to the possibility of infants becoming trapped and suffocating if the supports for the mattress detach. According to the recall, some bolts are not long enough to support the mattress, resulting in a potential collapse hazard.

The full size cribs feature model number 60091931 and were on the market in IKEA stores across the United States and in Canada from late 2005 into mid 2010. IKEA plans to offer a free crib repair kit.

Playboy Mansion Outbreak Linked to Legionnaires’ Disease

Friday, February 25th, 2011

According to Orlando Sentinel, a recent flu-like symptoms outbreak in Los Angeles may have been caused by a bacterium that grows in warm water. Two hundred Playboy Mansion partygoers became sick with fever, headaches and all over body aches, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Partygoers attended a fundraising event and festivities at the infamous bachelor pad on February 3, after attending a networking conference. Two days later, local hospitals and doctors reported seeing those partygoers for flu-like symptoms. While officials have not determined the cause, some attendees reported their doctors had said symptoms stemmed from Legionnaires’ disease, a type of pneumonia characterized with fever and headaches. One partygoer, David Castello, claims he suddenly fell ill with uncontrollable chills and a 102-degree fever. Castello, co-founder of Castello Cities Internet Network, suffered for five days with severe symptoms. The LA County health department sent Castello a letter, recommending he undergo several diagnostic tests, including chest x-rays.

Legionella pneumophila bacteria are usually found in warm water. Hot tubs and other warm water areas are seen as a breeding ground of Legionnaire’s disease causing bacteria, according to health officials. According to news reports, the Playboy Mansion’s infamous grotto is an area officials plan to examine for bacteria. The bacteria is not spread from person from person, but is inhaled in warm water vapor, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Company Employee Assaults Woman, Faces Injury Lawsuit

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

According to Southeast Texas Record, following the assault of another woman by a female employee, Dallas-based WFC Limited Partnership, doing business as World Finance Corporation, is being sued.

WFC Limited Partnership and its employee, Zanobia Jones, are being sued by Pam Atkins. Ms. Atkins filed the lawsuit against the two on January 19th, 2011. Originally, the suit was filed at the 123rd Judicial District Court of Panola County, but has since been removed to the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division, as of February 11th.

On May 12th, 2009, Ms. Atkins claims to have been assaulted by Ms. Jones. At the time of the assault, Ms. Atkins claims that Ms. Jones was acting within the scope of her employment at the time, which is why WFC Limited Partnership is included in the lawsuit; as they are liable for their employee’s actions.

The plaintiff is claiming that because Ms. Jones was acting ‘within the scope of her employment,’ that the assault was done both knowingly and intentionally.

Ms. Atkins is seeking an award of punitive damages; as well as awards for medical expenses, mental anguish, physical impairment, physical disfigurement, physical pain, physical injury, attorney’s fees, court costs and interest.

A trial by jury has been requested.
