Two Deaths in Early Morning Crash

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Two women, ages 19 and 20, were killed in an auto accident this morning when their vehicle was struck broadside at the intersection of the ramp from the 408 and Dean Road.  The force of the impact split their vehicle in two and threw the two women from the vehicle who were pronounced dead at the scene.

The man driving the other vehicle, an Infiniti SUV, survived the crash and was take to ORMC.

At first investigators were concerned because a child seat was also thrown from the vehicle.  They used infrared cameras to search for a possible child victim, but did found nothing.

According to reports, the cause of the accident appeared to be a red light runner, but investigators were not sure which vehicle ran the light.

New Training Class and Safety Campaign for Motorcycles

Friday, July 18th, 2008

On July 1, 2008 the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) implemented a new motorcycle training program aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle accidents.

The Basic Rider Course was designed by FDHSMV and will be offered by private schools and teachers.  Drivers who take the class and successfully pass the test will automatically be able to apply to have the motorcycle endorsement added to their driver’s license.  A list of approved sponsors can be found on the FDHSMV website.

The FDHSMV has also partnered with the Florida Riding Training Program and the Tallahassee law enforcement to promote new motorcycle safety campaign.  The campaign slogan is “Ride Proud, Dress Loud” which emphazes brightly colored clothing to improve a motorcyclist’s visibility in an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents.

It will be interesting to see just how successful the safety campaign will be.  For a motorcycle rider to improve his or her visibility means they would have to give up all the black leather gear they currently wear when they’re out on the road and replace it with bright, reflective colors.  That may be a difficult change for your die hard Harley-Davidson riders, but only time will tell.

Hit and Run Driver Arrested

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The Polk County Sheriff’s office reported arresting a suspect in the death of a pregnant woman due to a hit and run auto accident last week.  The victim was a 34 year-old pregnant woman from the Four Corners area in Polk County.

The driver was in her Ford Explorer traveling on Highway 27 when she passed a tractor-trailer on the right side of the highway in the grass where the victim had been walking, throwing her body about 70 feet.  The Ford Explorer did not stop and continued down 27, stopping at a nearby gas station.  The driver of the tractor-trailer stopped at the gas station and asked the driver “do you realize you just hit a young lady?” and the driver replied back “No, I didn’t”  and drove off.

Police located the vehicle which was registered to the driver’s husband based on a license plated number provided by witnesses.  The husband said his wife told him she hit the tractor-trailer which she also repeated to the deputies who arrested her.  She is charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash.
